Creating Your Own Instagram Photo Challenge

We've all seen the Instagram Photo-a-Day challenges that float around during certain months of the year. They're especially popular around major holidays, like Christmas. In a photo-a-day challenge, each day of the month has a "theme" or "topic," and you have to post a picture about that topic on your Instagram feed.

This past December, my friend said we should pick a challenge--there are plenty out there, for sure--and do it together through our Instagrams and our blogs. Yet among all of the seemingly endless choices, we couldn't find one single challenge we liked.

So we made our own.

This was really fun and gave us a chance to be creative little social media mavens. It wasn't hard to do, either. My friend ran the idea by me, and during my lunch break at school one day, we planned it, I made the graphic, and we launched it - all that day!

The hardest part was thinking of 31 different photos for each day in December; we had to pick a long month, didn't we? Some of the topics, like "selfie," "OOTD" and "nails," are photo-challenge "staples," meaning they're common in almost every photo-a-day challenge we looked at. We also had to include a #tbt-specific post to a childhood Christmas photo. The other topics are pretty winter and holiday specific, and we timed some of the more Christmasy pictures for later in the month, closer to the actual Christmas holiday.

Aside from all of the picture topics, we had to create a unique hashtag that we could use to tag all of our posts. This wasn't the easiest, but we eventually used #chrINSTAmaschallenge. We didn't have a ton of people participate with us, but my friend and I completed our challenge and are already thinking about another Christmas challenge this year!

If I could change anything this year, I would definitely think of an "easier" hashtag. #chrINSTAmaschallenge was almost a little too unique, so maybe a little simpler hashtag would be easier to remember. Also, we need to put our hashtag on the graphic we use to share our challenge. But aside from those, I was really happy with how our Instagram photo-a-day challenge turned out, and am excited to see how our next one goes, too!

Have you ever planned a photo-a-day challenge? What did you like best about it? What would you change?
